For this project I used a fun piece of fabric to sew up a quick book mark. I unfortunately did not take any pictures of the process because I got so engrossed in it, sorry!
What you will need:
- 20in x 3.5in piece of fabric
- Contrasting (or not) thread
- Sewing machine + pins + iron
Steps:
1. Measure out your piece of fabric. You can adjust the length and width as you see fit depending on how big you want it to be. It will be half the length (minus about 1 inch for your seam at the top) and about 1 inch narrower than you cut it (assuming a half inch seam allowance).
2. Fold over 1/2 inch on the top and bottom of the fabric so that the "good side" (if you fabric has them) are on the outsides and the "bad side" is now inside the fold. (the long ends) and stitch a straight stitch.
3. Once you have both ends folded over and hemmed the next step is to match the good sides together and have both the bad sides facing outward. At this point I recommend that you iron the bottom fold flat so that it lays totally flat as you pin the long edges to each other.
4. Next sew the two long sides shut with straight stitches. DO NOT stitch the top shut.
5. Now comes the fun part, turn your book mark inside out! Now it finally is starting to look like a bookmark. Iron it flat again if you would like. At this point simply close the top with any stitches you like. This is a great time to take advantage of the more exotic stitch patterns your machine may be able to do. In mine I sewed a straight stitch and a star pattern for a nice embellishment. Have fun and do whatever you like.
Bookmark in action! It works!
Enjoy your new bookmark!
